Solidarity Message for Netarhat Movement, Jharkhand

AICUF Jharkhand has taken initiative to gather the Indigenous students and participate in the Netarhat movements from 22nd -23rd March 2019 together with the Indigenous people of Jharkhand. The Netarhat Movement is one of the great movements of the indigenous people of Jharkhand.

This movement started in protest of firing ranges of the indigenous traditional lands 27 years ago. Recently, the Indian Supreme Court has ordered the forced eviction of more than 1,000,000 tribal and other forest-dwelling households from forestlands across 16 states after the government failed to defend a law protecting their rights. It is shocking news for all of us.

In the ILO Convention No. 107 it has been said that whether the indigenous peoples’ paper or documents are available or not, the lands which they traditionally use, have their land.  The UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) has been stated in 3 of Article 26 “States shall give legal recognition and protection to these lands, territories and resources. Such recognition shall be conducted with due respect to the customs, traditions and land tenure systems of the indigenous peoples concerned.” It has been clearly mentioned here that the states will give legal recognition and protection to the indigenous people, territories and organizations, but the states are dealing with them inversely.

Currently seen that the Indigenous people are migrating from their village to the city for economic development. They are struggling in a new environment in the city with family. They are migrating due to the lack of security in their area, threats of life, political and social pressures and uncertainty. They forced to leave the area due to political conflicts and adverse circumstances. They are also migrating because of the adverse circumstances of climate change. Indigenous people have to leave somewhere else, due to the domination and oppression of external settlers in their region.

Today, the indigenous people want to recognize their own cultural identity, land rights, territories, natural resources and civil status. Due to increasing conflicts and uncontrolled development activities in their area, they forced to leave their area. Descent movements are increasing due to human rights violations, threats, harassment of women, land grabbing and humiliation.

In the future, we want to see equally beautiful and rich diverse worlds for all, where there will not be so much discrimination among the people.

IMCS stands in support with the AICUF Jharkhand and Indigenous peoples. We stand against any discrimination and Human rights violations with the people. IMCS Pax Romana, Asia Pacific stand for indigenous people in Jharkhand and support Netarhat Field Firing Range protest movement.
