IMCS AP Pre-Papal Audience Event Report: Building a Sustainable Future Through Faith and Action

In anticipation of the Papal Private Audience with His Holiness Pope Francis, the event “Building a Sustainable Future Through Faith and Action” was organized in San Jose City, Nueva Ecija on th September 2024. This gathering brought together 80 enthusiastic youth and students, fostering a spirit of environmental stewardship and social responsibility rooted in faith-based teachings.

The event commenced with reflections on scriptural foundations, specifically Genesis 2:15 and Psalm 24:1. These passages emphasize humanity’s role as stewards of God’s creation, setting a theological basis for environmental care. Participants delved into Pope Francis’ encyclical “Laudato Si’,” which calls for urgent action against environmental degradation and highlights the interconnectedness of all creation. The discussions emphasized integral ecology and practical steps for sustainability, encouraging a holistic approach to environmental issues.

Interactive sessions included the screening of a thought-provoking video on current environmental challenges. This was followed by a lively discussion where participants examined how humanity has failed to protect our planet, leading to a broader conversation about our “Common Home.” Reflection questions prompted youth to consider the personal and collective changes needed to foster environmental responsibility.

A key focus of the event was recognizing youth as pivotal change-makers in environmental stewardship. Discussions highlighted the influence and responsibility of young people, showcasing successful youth-led initiatives at both global and local levels. Participants were encouraged to realize their potential in driving significant environmental actions and making a positive impact in their communities.

Practical steps for environmental action were also a crucial part of the program. Participants learned about the principles of reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling. They were urged to advocate for sustainable practices and adopt environmentally friendly habits in their daily lives, thereby fostering a culture of environmental mindfulness.

The event also aligned with the organizational objectives of IMCS, which include spirituality of action, capacity building, ecumenism and inclusiveness, and advocacy. Workshops aimed at enhancing participants’ skills and knowledge for effective environmental advocacy, promoting inclusiveness and interfaith dialogue as essential components of building a sustainable future.

The event concluded with heartfelt gratitude to all participants and organizers. The collective commitment to environmental stewardship and the shared vision for a sustainable future were celebrated, reinforcing the importance of faith and action in addressing today’s environmental challenges.

This event was a significant step towards empowering young people and listening to their voices, resonating with the spirit of the upcoming Papal Private Audience with His Holiness Pope Francis.
