Justice for Intan: PMKRI Condemns Violence Against Domestic Worker from NTT, Calls for Full Accountability
Ferdinandus Ate, Presidium for Foreign Affairs, National Executive Board of the Indonesian Catholic Student Association (PMKRI), 2024–2026
Jakarta, 23 June 2025 — A disturbing case of violence against a young domestic worker has sparked public outrage across Indonesia. The victim, Intan, a young woman from West Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), was reportedly subjected to severe physical abuse while working in a luxury residence in the elite Sukajadi area of Batam City, Riau Islands.
Intan’s case is even more alarming due to reports that she was forced—under the command of her male employer—to suffer violence at the hands of fellow domestic workers. This horrific abuse not only violates basic human rights but also highlights the ongoing reality of domestic worker exploitation in Indonesia.
She is currently receiving intensive treatment at Elisabeth Hospital in Batam, with serious physical injuries and signs of deep psychological trauma. Urgent state intervention is required—medical, legal, and psychosocial—to ensure her full recovery and safety.
Ferdinandus Wali Ate, Presidium for Foreign Affairs of the Indonesian Catholic Student Association (PMKRI) and a native of Kodi Utara, Southwest Sumba, issued a strong condemnation of the attack and demanded a full, transparent investigation.
“We strongly condemn the violence suffered by our sister, Intan. This is a clear violation of human rights. We appreciate the swift action taken by police to arrest the primary perpetrator. But that is not enough—everyone involved, including those who enabled or ignored the abuse, must be brought to justice without exception,” said Ferdinandus.
He emphasized that this is not an isolated incident. Many women from underdeveloped regions like NTT migrate to cities seeking livelihood—only to face high risks of abuse, exploitation, and systemic neglect.
“This is not just about one victim. It reflects a broader crisis in how we protect domestic workers. The government must urgently review recruitment systems, employer oversight, and reporting mechanisms, which often fail to protect victims,” he added.
Ferdinandus also expressed deep appreciation for the Flobamora Batam community, who have been actively accompanying the victim and advocating for legal action from the start.
He called on national and local governments, law enforcement, civil society, and religious organizations to strengthen protections for domestic workers and ensure such acts are never repeated.
“Human dignity must be the foundation of our national unity. Let us care for one another. Justice for Intan is not only a legal test—it is a moral one. Her safety, and the safety of every citizen, is our collective responsibility.”
