IMCS Asia Pacific Joins the Call: In Solidarity with the Peoples of the Cordillera - Baguio City, Philippines — April 24–26, 2025

The International Movement of Catholic Students (IMCS) Asia Pacific stood in solidarity with the Indigenous peoples of the Cordillera during the 41st Peoples’ Cordillera Day held from April 24 to 26, 2025, in Baguio City, Philippines. The annual gathering, led by the Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA), once again became a vibrant expression of Indigenous unity, resistance, and resilience under the banner: “Assert Our Rights. Persist in the Struggle for Self-Determination. Advance the Politics of Change!”

Representing IMCS Asia Pacific at the event, Bertha Samponu, the regional coordinator and a young Tanimbarese woman from the Tanimbar Islands in the Moluccas, Indonesia, delivered a moving message of cross-border Indigenous solidarity.

“On this Cordillera Day, I stand in deep solidarity with the Kaigorotan peoples of the Cordillera. As Indigenous communities, we share histories of resistance and ongoing struggles for ancestral land, self-determination, and dignity. From the Moluccas to the Cordillera, we face the same forces: extractive industries, state repression, and the erosion of Indigenous ways of life in the name of ‘development.’

Though our contexts may differ, our stories are intimately connected. Across Indonesia, the Philippines, and much of Asia, Indigenous Peoples confront the same systems that displace, divide, and deny us our rights.

This Cordillera Day, we recognize the joint struggle of Indigenous peoples all over the globe against the plunder of their ancestral lands by the state and foreign corporations. We stand for the self-determination of Indigenous Peoples and the defense of their ancestral lands. We call for justice and accountability for the human rights violations committed against Indigenous communities. Our shared struggle unites us—and our unity urges us toward an undefeated path.””

Long live international solidarity!
Long live Indigenous resistance!”

The Cordillera Day events featured a Cultural Program, a Summit on Energy Transition and Indigenous Peoples’ Rights, and a culminating Makabayan Parade and Miting de Avance. Together, they spotlighted pressing issues, including the aggressive expansion of Makilala Mining Corporation within ancestral lands, and the broader threats of climate injustice, militarization, and displacement of Indigenous communities.

As participants marched under the rallying cries of #NoToMakilalaMining, #DefendCordilleraPH, #AssertPersistAdvance, and #LabanAmianan, the Cordillera once again became a powerful symbol of resistance not only for the Philippines but for Indigenous movements across the globe.

IMCS Asia Pacific reaffirms its commitment to support Indigenous youth and communities in asserting their rights and shaping a future grounded in justice, peace, and care for creation. As a Catholic student movement, we believe that safeguarding our common home begins with defending those who have protected it for generations.
