Luke 6:20–21
“Looking at his disciples, he said: ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied.’”

As we commemorate the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we reflect on the words of Jesus in Luke 6:20-21. His blessings for the poor and hungry remind us of the profound dignity and value of every individual, regardless of their socioeconomic status. While acts of charity provide immediate relief, the eradication of poverty demands systemic change and grassroots-level interventions.

Charity, though essential, offers only temporary respite. To truly eradicate poverty, we must prioritize addressing the root causes embedded in corrupted systems. Structural changes are necessary to create a society where everyone has equal access to opportunities and resources. This involves challenging and transforming the political, economic, and social structures that perpetuate inequality and marginalization.

Grassroots-level intervention is a necessity. Sustainable change comes from empowering communities to take control of their destinies. This means providing not just relief funds but also creating opportunities for economic independence. Vocational training, education, and access to credit and markets are critical components in helping the poor lift themselves out of poverty. By investing in people and their potential, we enable them to become self-reliant and resilient.

The journey towards eradicating poverty is a collective effort. Each small act of kindness, each step towards justice, contributes to a larger movement. Together, we can create an ocean where countless individuals have the chance to thrive and enjoy their lives.

As we mark this day, let us commit to acting in ways that foster systemic change and empowerment. Let us work towards a future where poverty is a thing of the past, and every person can live with dignity and hope.

Happy International Day for the Eradication of Poverty!
